The Scholastic Clay Target Program was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.  It offers young men and women the opportunity to compete as a team in trap for state and national championships as well as college scholarship money. Nearly 40 states and 5,000 youths take part in SCTP.  Trap shooting is an Olympic sport that nearly everyone can participate in.  The program is designed to install safe firearms handling, commitment, responsibility, leadership, and teamwork.

The SCTP started in Giles County in January 2006 with both high schools having teams.  Coaches from the schools were recruited for the teams.  Many private individuals took roles as volunteer assistant coaches.  A non-profit organization was started (Wakefield Scholastic Trap Teams) to support the students in this costly sport of trap shooting.  A trap range was constructed on the property of Corky Wakefield for the teams to hold practices.

It is the goal of the non-profit organization to continue financial support and upkeep of the trap range for the life of the program.  The Giles county Deer Hunters Association has helped this effort the last two years by giving money to purchase shells and clays.  This is greatly appreciated as this shooting sport grows in Giles county.  We now have 29 students from the two high schools and 23 junior high students from Richland.
